🎙️ An ode to student journalism 🎙️
Hello everybody! I’m overseeing the supplement for our July print issue and I need your help! So this week’s pitch newsletter is all about how to get involved. In this month’s issue we’re exploring how UBC students are defining freedom of speech — through activism, journalism, art and beyond. Given that pitches this week are for print, all pieces will run on a strict deadline. More info below!

Me when I edit poetry Cr. DD McInnes
Some things to keep in mind:
To secure a pitch, respond to this email. I’m accepting writers on a first come first serve basis for all pieces, not including creative writing works.
Are you a first-time writer? Please let me know in your email response.
Once I confirm your pitch request, you can expect a follow-up email from me within 24 hours with more details on the piece.
Consider conflict of interest implications when picking up a piece and ask me about this if you’re unsure.
I LOVE COMMUNICATION! I will check in with you throughout the writing process but it’s also on YOU to tell ME if you’re feeling stressed about deadlines or unsure about how to proceed with anything. I gotcha <3
Creative non-fiction and free speech
I’m looking for some creative non-fiction that explores themes surrounding freedom of speech: activism, censorship, power imbalance and everything in between.
Poetry*: 200-300 words Due Friday, July 12 at 5pm

*The poetry word count of 200-300 words can be distributed across however many works you’d like. For example, the word count can amount to multiple poems, a longer poem, etc.
To pick up a pitch, please send me an email by Monday, July 8 at 5 p.m. with a brief description of what your piece is about. I will let you know if your piece has been greenlit as there are limited spaces.
