Pitches for Frolicking
Friends, is it not just the most glorious day today? One of these days, I’m putting on a cute outfit, finding a nice body of water to sit by and reading a book in the shade. Then maybe I’ll go frolicking in a field, who knows? – Just kidding, that’s definitely not gonna happen because Happy End of Term 1, everyone!
I’m back with a short pitch list this week. Two things: 1. Stay tuned to our Discord and Facebook for some important notes on potential meet-ups or workshops over the summer! 2. I don’t think I say this enough in these emails: if there’s a topic or issue you’re interested in covering that goes beyond whatever I pitch out, shoot me an email! I’m always looking for new ideas. Wishing everyone a lovely Thursday afternoon!

Some things to keep in mind:
To secure a pitch, respond to this email. I’m accepting writers on a first come first serve basis for all pieces, not including creative writing works.
Are you a first-time writer? Please let me know in your email response.
Once I confirm your pitch request, you can expect a follow-up email from me within 24 hours with more details on the piece.
Consider conflict of interest implications when picking up a piece and ask me about this if you’re unsure.
I LOVE COMMUNICATION! I will check in with you throughout the writing process but it’s also on YOU to tell ME if you’re feeling stressed about deadlines or unsure about how to proceed with anything. I gotcha <3
AI in the Classroom
At the May 15 UBC Senate meeting, the Generative AI in Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee presented draft guidelines outlining the use of generative AI in the classroom. This feature aims to look into how students are using generative AI to enhance their studies and how AI is changing the implications of academic misconduct. Talk to the Generative AI in Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee to see how they are considering the benefits of AI in their guidelines while navigating evolving definitions of academic misconduct, as well as students who are using AI to better their learning.

Our Creative non-fiction corner:
I’ve been loving everyone’s creative writing submissions about birds! I initially planned to change the prompt/theme every other month, but with so many writers reaching out in the last month (thank you!), I think it’s time to change things up. As of tomorrow, it’s officially summer! So, naturally, this month’s theme will be: heat! Interpret that however you want and get creative (ex. hating the heat, loving the heat, climate change etc.)
Instructions about how to respond to this pitch are below:
Please send me a brief email by next Friday, June 28 at 5pm with the following information: 1. your full name and pronouns, 2. the structure of your piece (i.e. poem OR personal essay OR short story), and 3. a brief description of what your piece is about. If you're planning on doing something more fictional, I'd also like an additional brief explanation (50-100 words) about how you came up with the piece and/or what it means to you. I'll likely attach that 50-100 word description to your publication.
For now, please only send me one pitch and stick to that. Depending on everyone's progress in the next month, I'll reach out to see if anyone is interested in writing another piece under this topic before the end of July.
Reminder to those writing a piece for this month’s bird prompt: drafts are due by tomorrow, June 21 at 5pm!
