🐛🌱 Pitches to go on a nature walk with 🌱🐛

Folks! Welcome to another term!

Nature is awesome. I went on a hike for the first time in months last weekend and it was ✨cathartic✨ I’ll be thinking about Bridal Falls for weeks to come. After whatever the hell 2024 was, I needed it. Go a walk. Get a friend or don’t. Just go do it — and then consider picking up one of these pitches.

But first, a few announcements:

  • I’m holding a workshop on Wednesday January 29 at 1 p.m. in the boardroom about how to pitch for long-form articles. This is a great skill to have under your belt and is a great primer for pitching a features piece.

  • The Ubyssey is holding some interesting workshops later this month, open to all contributors:

    • Trauma-informed workshop:  Friday, January 31 at 10 a.m.

    • Naloxone training: Monday, January 20 at 4 p.m.

  • As usual, general meetings are on Fridays at 4 p.m. in our office. This is a great opportunity to learn how to get involved at the paper and get to know other journalists.

Best of luck with the start of the term,

— Fiona

  • Consider conflict of interest implications when picking up a piece and ask me about this if you’re unsure.

  • I LOVE COMMUNICATION! I will check in with you throughout the writing process but it’s also on YOU to tell ME if you’re feeling stressed about deadlines or unsure about how to proceed with anything. I gotcha <3

Check out this resource on how to pitch long-form pieces and come to January 29’s pitching workshop. Not sure if your idea fits best in a long-form format? Send me an email anyways and we’ll figure it out together!
